Senior Accountant

POSITION SUMMARY
The Senior Accountant oversees the day-to-day accounting operations and financial transactions of the Foundation for a Just Society (FJS) and manages the processing of financial entries for FJS’s subsidiary, FJS Legacy LLC. The Senior Accountant ensures the integrity of accounting information by recording, verifying, consolidating, and entering transactions while utilizing hands-on accounting experience and an in-depth understanding of accounting principles and FJS practices. They will supervise the Staff Accountant and will be supervised by the Controller.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES + RESPONSIBILITIES
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems, ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
- Perform month-end closing procedures such as monthly journal entries and account reconciliations.
- Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports accurately and in a timely manner.
- Maintain internal controls.
- Assist Controller with leading and overseeing annual audit and Form 990 PF preparation. Prepare audit and Form 990 PF supporting schedules, respond to information requests and resolve open items.
- Oversee preparation of reporting on budget to actuals and support staff with the annual budgeting process.
- Review and manage accounts payable, ensuring compliance with FJS financial policies and procedures (proper approval, coding, W-9, W-8 BEN, contract agreements).
- Oversee the FJS credit card program and provide assistance and guidance with credit card expense reports in Expensify. Research, resolve, and communicate discrepancies and exceptions with the end users.
- Support new staff onboarding process and provide finance-related trainings for staff.
- Support and consult staff on accounting control procedures and FJS policies.
- Provide exemplary customer service to all staff.
- Develop recommendations to optimize FJS’s accounting systems and procedures and detect inaccuracies.
- Supervise and mentor the Staff Accountant. Plan and review their work for accuracy and participate in bi-annual performance reviews.
- Assist Controller with cash management, monthly cash flow preparation and analysis.
- Identify and implement technology and automation to improve efficiency.
- Support regulatory reporting and related audits, and compliance issues.
- Perform any other duties or tasks as assigned or required.
REQUIREMENTS
Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related degree required.
- Minimum five years of relevant accounting required.
- Audit experience strongly preferred.
- Supervisory experience is preferred.
- Hands-on experience with investment accounting is a plus.
- Demonstrated commitment to the Foundation’s vision and mission and alignment with its values.
Skills
- Strong knowledge of GAAP standards and financial accounting statements.
- Excellent Excel skills required, including knowledge of pivot tables and VLOOKUP.
- Tech-savvy and comfortable embracing new systems and tools.
- Excellent analytical and quantitative skills, with accuracy and attention to detail.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Excellent problem-solving, time management skills and communication skills.
- Competency in Accounting software packages. Working knowledge of QuickBooks is preferred. Knowledge of NetSuite and experience with accounting software conversion is a plus.
- Ability to adapt and remain flexible in a fast-changing environment.
- Ability to collaborate with colleagues around tasks, priorities, deadlines, and idea generation.
Eligibility to work in the United States and willingness to travel to participate in staff retreats. This is a hybrid position based in New York City.
COMPENSATION AND CULTURE
Salary range: $103,840 - $129,800, depending on experience.
